Lana Al-Abbasi, a student from the Faculty of Science at King Abdulaziz University, has been awarded a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford. This year, two seats were allocated to Saudi students out of over 100 global placements for the 2025 program.
Established over 120 years ago, the Rhodes Trust Scholarship is the world’s oldest and has been awarded to notable international figures. Al-Abbasi successfully navigated a rigorous selection process, culminating in final interviews conducted by a panel of prominent experts.
Lana Al-Abbasi explained that her aspiration to join the Rhodes program began during her first visit to Oxford, where one of her research advisors was a member of the university’s faculty. She has an impressive portfolio with five scientific publications to her name.
Recently, Al-Abbasi won the award for the Best Published Undergraduate Science Paper at King Abdulaziz University’s 15th Scientific Forum. She has conducted two studies in particle physics alongside Dr. Abdullah Abdulsalam from the Physics Department, qualifying her to participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in 2020 and 2021.
Al-Abbasi aims to pursue a PhD in astrophysics and is committed to expanding research in space sciences and promoting awareness of fundamental sciences.
In a groundbreaking achievement, Lana founded and currently leads “Falak,” Saudi Arabia’s first mentorship-driven research program in space sciences. The program connects students with local and international experts to conduct pioneering research in space science and technology.
The Rhodes Scholarship is poised to equip Saudi students with critical skills and knowledge that align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, supporting national goals through education and research excellence.
It’s noteworthy that the Rhodes Trust Scholarship initiative for Saudi students was first established in 2018, funded by Mr. Muhammad Bin Abdulrahman Alagil. A second scholarship was added in 2020, supported by the family of Abdulrahman Alagil, co-founders of Jarir Bookstore, in collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Education. Education remains a pillar of Vision 2030, shaping a promising future for the Kingdom. |
