The President of King Abdulaziz University, Dr. Turki bin Youssef Al-Omaimy, received a delegation from the University of Oxford, UK, headed by Professor Paul Brennan, on Monday, 16/5/1446 AH (corresponding to November 18, 2024). The meeting was attended by the university’s vice presidents and Dr. Salman bin Bakr Al-Hosawi, Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Innovation in Precision Medicine.
The two sides discussed the outcomes and goals of the center, focusing on building and developing human capacities in artificial intelligence and pharmaceutical discoveries. This includes student exchanges, summer programs between the two universities, postgraduate programs at Oxford, and establishing joint academic programs, as well as holding periodic meetings, seminars, and workshops.
The center emphasizes research, development, and innovation to discover new drugs and develop advanced technologies that contribute to creating startups and transferring technology, thereby bolstering the knowledge-based economy. It aims to become a global reference for consultancy in artificial intelligence and precision medicine discoveries. Additionally, it seeks to maximize the utilization of available resources and scientific expertise at both universities to capitalize quickly on opportunities presented by the rapidly changing global digital economy.
The visiting Oxford delegation’s program includes specialized scientific lectures in biochemistry, molecular biology, and pharmaceutical sciences, focusing on their innovative applications to various diseases. These seminars will be held on Tuesday, November 19, at the King Fahd Medical Research Center. The program also includes visits to key research facilities at King Abdulaziz University to explore available resources and foster collaboration across different fields.
The visit concludes with an awards ceremony for students who participated in the exchange program between the two universities. This year’s program, held virtually at King Abdulaziz University, involved interactive communication with Oxford researchers and resulted in five projects completed by 25 students from various disciplines and academic levels.
The Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Innovation in Precision Medicine, a collaboration between King Abdulaziz University and the University of Oxford, leverages the infrastructure of both institutions and employs advanced digital technologies such as machine learning, quantum computing, and big data. The center integrates expertise from diverse fields including biochemistry, medicine, pharmacy, epidemiology, computing, big data, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, data science, and quantum computing, all aimed at the discovery and development of precision treatments. |
